Enter Mrs Ballack. While other Chelsea players were reporting back for training Michael Ballack was on a yacht marrying his long-term girlfriend Simone Lambe at the exclusive Bavarian Yacht Club, Lake Starnberg.

The newlyweds are to celebrate with a small party tonight and have invited around 400 guests to party tomorrow.

Ballack and Lambe are back to familiar territory. He and Lambe and their three sons, Louis, six, Emilio, five and Jordi, three,  lived on the lake while he played for Bayern München from 2002 to 2006.

They met in a café in Kaiserslautern 10 years ago when Ballack was playing for the city’s team and Lambe, a trained pharmacy assistant, was working there. Ballack has said that for him it was love at first sight.
